Induction of subcommittees of the Urban Councils Association has begun with members of the Health Services Subcommittee being the first to be inducted on 14 February 2019 in Marondera. 

The Health Services Subcommittee is made up of the Mayor of Beitbridge Municipality and Second Vice President of UCAZ Clr Morgan Ncube; the Chairperson of Chipinge Town Council Clr Zivanai Nyakuchena, Chairperson of Gokwe Town Council Clr N. Gwanzura; Mayor of Gwanda Municipality Clr Jastone Mazhale; Chairperson of Lupane Local Board, Mrs Monica Ngwenya; Chairperson of Rusape Town Council Clr Layton Sithole and Clr Matiere S. Gumisirai the Chairperson of Norton Town Council.

The objectives of the induction were to acquaint subcommittee members with: the governance structure of UCAZ; the subcommittee’s terms of reference; organisation of a typical health department in a local authority; the Zimbabwe National Health Strategy; laws governing health in Zimbabwe; duties of local authorities in safeguarding health and public health preparedness in local authorities.

Facilitators included the Executive of the Directors of Health Services Forum led by its Chairperson and Director of City Health for the City of Harare, Dr Clemence Duri. Other members of the Forum Executive were Dr Daniel Chirundu who is the forum secretary and also Director of Health for the City of Kadoma and Mr Bernam Nyawo, Director of Health for Ruwa Local Board.

The subcommittee members appreciated the training and hoped to improve the provision health services through sharing best practices.

After the induction, the subcommittee held its first meeting the following day. Members elected the Chairperson of Rusape Town Council Clr Layton Sithole as the Chairperson of the Subcommittee. The Deputy Chairperson is the Mayor of Gwanda Municipality Clr Jastone Mazhale.

Induction for the other subcommittees namely, Housing and Community Services; Technical Services; Management, Manpower and Legal; Finance and Audit and Women in Local Government will be conducted soon.
